Parents save more for sons’ college. Do they just have more faith in daughters’ smarts? http://on.wsj.com/2AcS2dz

My dad told me (and my brother), "If you're smart enough to go to college, you're smart enough to figure out how to pay for it."

That actually worked for me 40 years ago; not today without incurring huge debt.

Scholarships, attending part-time & working part time, (better still, working full time for employers who reimburse tuition) decrease debt.

Those are all possible, but less than ideal, for some people. I worked and paid for undergrad (missing lots of opportunities to intern, etc.) then had an employer partially pay for grad school (delaying my ability to go out on my own). It probably cost me 10 years, career-wise.

Truthfully, I think parents still hope their daughters will make successful marriages, bringing college payments to a crashing halt.

Sadly, that is probably the case.

No... they do however invest in paying for the wedding that the daughter has. That has always been tradition.
