But if you apply this as a first amendment principle, what would happen to religious schools? Would they lose funding?

If they are getting government funding they should adhere to the government's rules. Free speech is included, why would the religion matter?

And it would be inconsistent to enforce one clause but not others. They are intertwined and based on the same principles.
