You'd be amazed at what folks did in the 1950's who had postage stamp yards where they grew tomatoes, lettuce, pole beans, to hell with mums

Small towns before the 1980's had folks putting in small gardens in their yards, because usable soil was a terrible thing to waste.

And that's why my sister returned to the 1950's and plowed up over half of her backyard to grow a ton of fresh food for freezing and canning

Define "giant". Most farms in the US are still family farms. There are less than before, though.

Uh and by America's food, don't you mean the food that feeds the billions of animals we needlessly slaughter/torture/murder every year?

Isn't this old news? How do we drive it back in the other direction toward small local farms that respect both land and community?

While the US is increasingly gravitating towards large farms developing countries like India are having more fragmented holdings.

All you really need is dirt, seeds, water, and access to sun to grown anything just about anywhere. No excuses if someone has a house.

And are any wild areas are allowed to flourish among the acres of planted crop? How many farmers are eco savvy & use bats for pest control?

I detest hearing about poor black families who complain they can't afford produce if they own an inner city house with any yard space.

When I look at a house anywhere, I look at how much yard it has, location of the sun during the day, and number of trees = gardening

There is an art to knowing how to use a few acres of land to your advantage and how to feed livestock for free to keep a freezer full.

You've hit on a key thing here: knowing. Many urban blacks have lost that knowledge. It's not simply a lack of drive or whatever.

At 61, I'm not getting back into small farm life like my parents were to support a family of 8, but lots of Americans could if they wanted.

Knocked down dried field corn is free food to small farmers or land owners who want to raise a few hogs to avoid buying meat in stores.

There are not enough deer willing to risk being in open fields near highways in southern Maryland to eat that knocked down dried field corn.

Most larger farmers want that dried field corn gone, because some rotate crops from year to year to keep their soil usable. Need corn gone.

That was in southern Indiana. Here in Maryland, I see lots of corn laying on the ground that could be used for small farmers w/ livestock.
