Scare quotes around "food insecure": you know, in case we were worried this author has ever met a poor person.

I have known kids from families with plenty of money but no food in fridge because parents were too busy chasing success in NYC.

My students would rather buy a cancer causing diet drink and bag of chips than eat the free food available to every student.

awful piece. 1/ 75% does not reflect individual school makeup & is irrelevant when it comes to stigma & kids
-
2/ costs *might* rise if more kids take lunch. if she's correct nobody wants it, costs won't rise
-
3/& even if food costs rise, ignores offsetting admin savings & benefits to improved school climate
-
4/many of the 25% r ineligible bc parents can't or won't fill out forms not because they are too rich
-
5/NYC PK-8 schls can't withhold food or force pay. So city already paying, this aligns budget appropriately.
-
6/ other cities/large districts have done this (Boston, chicago) & increased costs are minimal.
-
7/ if you really care about tax $ go whine about subsidies to rich suburban drivers.http://transitcenter.org/publications/who-pays-for-parking/ …

Since 75% is a substantial majority, the stigmatizing may be on those who bring their own lunch.
