PARENTS should teach their kids how to debate respectfully. It's called manners. So 1950's, I know. 😒

As a coll debate prof, I'm astounded by students disregard for ethics by the time they reach me. I move the needle but problem starts early

Most universities don't have freedom of speech. They shut down conservative points of view.

We should be learning debate earlier than college. We need to learn how to listen to opposing views and present our own without feeling hurt

Without clear concise debate, were just slinging poo. It's ok to disagree, but do so with articulated arguments imbued with facts.

In some parts of the country, yes, it's gone away in many others. I used to teach it 15 years ago and brought it back BC we are in need.

How about teaching students how to properly #communicate all the way around.

Sadly, common courtesy is not so common anymore.

Listening is the big one. Most people don't listen. They think of their own responses, instead of staying focused on the conversation.

I agree tho, IMHO, courtesy is founded on considering the comfort of others & "listening" as well as not interrupting = politeness. 🙂

More than that they should teach them to THINK critically. A lost art in today's higher education. Quack, quack, waddle, waddle.
