For electric vehicles to displace traditional cars, oil must get pricier, batteries a lot cheaper, or bothhttp://on.wsj.com/2ukjaYX

The energy density of batteries are still quite low as compared to hydrocarbon sources. We still have a long way ahead.

The energy density of batteries is not a problem at all.

        Stored energy in fuel: 47.5 MJ/kg and 34.6 MJ/liter; A lithium-ion battery pack has about 0.3 MJ/kg and about 0.4 MJ/liter; 100x difference

Doesn't matter. With gasoline you could have a 2000 mile range, but that's useless. Batteries are good enough for any trip.

That's called a bandaid. The costs are still too high for the average consumer, with a large percentage of costs in the batteries.

No they aren't. You are using talking points from five years ago.

Charge time and availability of charging stations still not where it needs to be for the masses. Improvements are on the horizon (Li-air)

Again, your talking points are old. Charging times are already fast enough that you can drive all day charging only when you stop to eat.

People who live in multi-family housing must have a way to charge their cars at home. Otherwise, with hours-long charging times? No.

I just had an electrician come out - now takes around 3 hours to fully charge. Don't need anything else for normal driving.

Can't do that as a renter in an apartment building with a shared parking lot, unfortunately.

Yes. If you put lots of daily miles on a car you'll need access to a plug. If not, a charge lasts many days so overnight standard plug is ok

So, if they want electric cars to replace gas/diesel, then those of us who rent or live in condos/townhouses/apartments must have chargers.

And this will happen. Also cities need to change, more walking and bikes. Also autonomous vehicles will end dominance of car ownership model

Or Elon happens to offer people the choice of EVs. Without Tesla, big car companies were too lazy to care about pollution but profit.

If the market demands it, they will sell it. Like hybrids, they were there before $TSLA, and every automaker offers them.

The EV car is likely to be like current VR headsets, cool items, just not much demand for them. Basically a niche item.
