How to make an unreliable, inefficient & expensive power source very slightly less unreliable... & more expensive.

The only novelty here is using a coal mine as the lower reservoir. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumped-storage_hydroelectricity …

Power storage, not power source. I'm surprised that an editor let this past, the decline of western journalism is nearly complete.

Agreed! Had to correct Seeker twice today. They called water an element and said solar cells store energy. Who's hiring these people?

It is a little expensive but what a fantastic idea. @GOP needs to get on board to #MAGA since #ClimateChangeIsReal

It's essentially a large rechargeable battery that is much safer for the environment and easier to fix than what is already used

Safer for environment? Only if you seal the reservoir

Net power gain cannot justify the cost. Dumb ideal. No taxpayer money on this boondoggle.

This dumb idea is already used in many places without the coalmine, reducing costs and improving reliability. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumped-storage_hydroelectricity …

Uses more energy than it makes and costs consumers more. OK for TVA. Bad for taxpayer.

Pumped hydroelectric will always lose power. However, it makes power cheaper by reducing the needed capacity. Look at the Wikipedia article.

The headline is misleading. This is not an energy "source." This is an energy storage system. Interesting idea but not a new way to generate
