No the scrutiny comes from some right wing Christian nutbags who feel the need for a gestapo police force

This would be much like a university police force (almost same). Would you call the universities nut bags who need a gestapo police force?

Alabama. Such a gorgeous state with very wonderful people. Goes from bad leaders to ridiculous decisions about public safety. God love her.

So why can't they have a security team instead of a law enforcement unit beholden to the church?

In theory that's what they're trying to do. Except a private security force would not be able to enforce any laws.

It's private property. Private security can enforce rules on a property. If laws are broken, the church has a terrible record of being honest

But it would have to turn all incidents over to the police and basically be powerless. That's why universities have "true" police.

In the article, this law would allow just this church to do it. Can all religious groups do this? This feels like a good ole boy hook up.

Why give cart Blanche when you don't have to? It feels more like an ad hoc solution for a difficult problem.
