He broke a law for which the punishment is deportation.

Because republicans didn't want to pass a comprehensive immigration bill.
-
What does that even mean? We have immigration laws in the U.S.

Paid taxes, hired people, now most likely business will close, people will lose their jobs, his wife might end up getting help from the fed
-
If he paid taxes he did so with a fake ssn, another law broken.

Trump's 6th grade level rhetoric normalizes bullying and hate crimes.
-
Since when is the law of the land "rhetoric"?
-
and ICE deporting him before the judicial system had time to rule was paying attention to the law of the land?
-
He isn't an American, our justice system does not apply to him!
-
The one good thing about Trump, He's letting us identify the scum coming out of their slimy holes to perpetuate hatred and racism
-
There is no hatred and racism involved with a sovereign nation's borders.

So this guy made it 20 years undocumented and never tried to get citizenship.
-
Because he COULDNT. There's no comprehensive immigration bill.
-
Well that's the risk he knowingly took by coming here illegally in the first place.

Can we ask the real question and understand why he didn't apply for a green card and become a legal immigrant?
-
Once you are here you can't apply for any type of immigration status—including green card. We have NO policy for them. Repubs =no amnesty.
-
In all seriousness, is this true? I'm not up to speed on immigration law. Would need to return to Mexico and the apply?
-
Yup—the application process can take years. US has no immigration policy for undocumented immigrants living here for decades.
-
The real point you seem to be missing here is that he had to come illegally at the first place. What's the excuse there?
-
It's not about excuses or punishment—it's about a HUMANE policy for 11 million (!) undocumented US immigrants—deportation is NOT a policy
-
Well actually it is as a matter of fact. Is it a great policy? Maybe not. At the same time we can't just naturalize every illegal immigrant
-
My two cents and I'm not partisan huge demographic problem will hit US in a few years we will need immigrants. Criminals should be deported
