@WSJ@WSJscience I believe that's the Aral Sea.. -
@KhusravArifov@WSJ@WSJscience It's from arid inland Australia in a catchment called the Paroo... it's bone dry until it's all underwater! -
@robbibt
@WSJ@WSJscience Those lakes on the left look similarly to how the Aral Sea looks nowadays with it drying up -
@KhusravArifov@WSJ@WSJscience Here at least it's a natural process: many of our arid ecosystems and species are adapted to dry conditions -
@robbibt
@WSJ@WSJscience Yes I think Australia gives a lot better attention to its environment than most countries if I'm not mistaken.. -
@KhusravArifov@WSJ@WSJscience Sadly, that's getting less true. We're not aral sea-bad, but things aren't great: https://theconversation.com/great-barrier-reef-bleaching-is-just-one-symptom-of-ecosystem-collapse-across-australia-58579 … -
@KhusravArifov@WSJ@WSJscience There's some amazing work being done by scientists all over the country; it's just the lack of funding!
