Medical professionals started using the term doctor, taken from academic circles, to give themselves credence and differentiate between quacks/snake oil salesmen and people who studied. Academics were the original doctors.

This article is plain anti-intellectualism at its finest. The “hidden” jabs in this piece are ridiculous. Any commentary about current happenings made by a person with a PhD in Polisci is in no way comparable to an opinion from a random person off the street. Facts>Opinion

@rondia: A PhD is an actual doctor in the truest sense of the word. Physicians are referred to as “Dr” as an colloquialism. We don’t have post-grad degrees (MD or MBBS). Surgeons in the British system are even referred to as “Mr” and not “Dr” as they aren’t technically physicians

@rondia are you familiar with the history of the term ‘Doctor’? I’m afraid medics, as much as I respect them, have less claim on it than academics. Please do some research.

But the word “doctor” literally means “teacher”. If anything, those with doctorates warrant it more than those you listed.

Ph.d. Holders rarely ever use their title outside of academia. This is kind of a moot point.

To my knowledge WSJ has not had a problem with the Doctor when he started calling himself the doctor in 1963. Why now all the sudden does @rondia bring this up now that the Doctor is female? Get over it.

I'm quite sure the author's 'real doctors' used to be called physicians (or quacks), not 'dr.'

Fuck outta here 🙄. The term doctor was used for scholars (PhDs...) long before MDs got a hold of it.

My Dad worked as a research scientist. He was extremely intelligent and worked hard for that Ph.d. Tell Mom they don’t just hand them out to any old uneducated fool. How much education did your Mom have? Bet not much.

He also had a veterinary degree. Is your Mom okay with veterinaries being called Dr? Dentists? Chiropractors? Naturopaths?

"If you can’t write a prescription, you shouldn’t be called ‘Doctor." This misguided sentence, an AMA wet dream, perfectly encapsulates the horrible notion that only those who prescribe drugs practice medicine. And, incidentally, why drug abuse is such an epidemic in the US.

Given the dumbing down of the bachelor degree, shouldn’t medical “doctors” be required to have at least master’s level qualifications? Given the very low status of graduates these days I don’t feel comfortable seeing a doctor with just a MB BS.
