        The skin is full of bacteria at all times. This is doubly true for sick patients and those in the hospital.

        Yup. Skin provides a barrier to microbes. Many of the microbes are tolerated and the body is often in synergy with them to help them outcompete the bad bacteria. However, this doesn't always work. And any cut, including microcuts too small to see, can let bacteria inside.

        Sadly, many medical personnel don't wash their hands - they just use some kind of antibacterial product. I'm also sure their wearing their scrubs outside & on public transporation & then going around patients doesn't help either.
