A pair of academics offer a dramatic rule to increase competitiveness—and cut almost a half-hour from a nine-inning game, writes @JasonGayhttps://on.wsj.com/2MZC9ly

I’m so tired of people trying to “save baseball”.

Dumb. Baseball is a beautiful game. The longer it takes, the better. No need to fix what is not broken.

Ugh. Hate this. Not because I’m old and curmudgeonly but because baseball is beautiful the way it is, and this might literally make it a bad call to send a runner Home rather than keeping the bases loaded in a tie game. Baseball isn’t broken. Stop trying to fix it.

If you must “fix baseball” let the players be your guide. Let them celebrate and bat flip and emote. Don’t let umps chase players to the dugout to toss them for expressing emotions long as theyre not callous or hateful. Mic up players. They’re charismatic. Let them show it

Make it easier to share clips and highlights. Let your stars shine. Let your consumers consume the game the modern way they now want to, rather than trying to modernize the game and distribute and sell it in an old fashioned way.

How about you can't remove a relief pitcher mid-inning if he's just recorded an out? That would lead to fewer pitching changes/fewer commercial breaks during the later innings, but still allow for changes if a pitcher is getting shelled.

Also, no more commercial breaks between pitching changes.

one of the dumbest ideas i've ever read. Takes so much strategy/ideas out of the game. Changes the game drastically. There are so many other ways to speed up the game. Also baseball doesn't have a viewship problem, ratings/interest at the game is actually extremely high.

Has any research been done on how many select teams for <12U today vs 5-10 yrs ago? Seems a lot of kids are playing. Attendance is down - u can watch anywhere anytime on a device. How many games did the researchers attend? Bal vs TB is not a good ref pt.
