As midterms approach, the GOP needs something to match Democrats' fervor. That something is the Trump base, writes @GeraldFSeib.https://on.wsj.com/2wzQl9V

Dream on - there aren't enough of them anymore. At least half of Trumps votes were from people fed up with Govt an opposed to Hillary. The half were ignorant deplorables! Now they have seen how horrible he really is and that support is chipping away every day. GOP is complicit!!

@realDonaldTrump’s base is getting smaller and smaller. It doesn’t matter how much fervor they have.

The problem Bannon is facing is that most Trump supporters support Trump alone. They're largely indifferent toward Republicans in general. Remember that a big part of the Presidents message early on was that Republicans suck and need to go away.

So, in short, the GOP should try to gin up enthusiasm by scaring/pandering to the oldest, whitest, least educated xenophobes? Wow. What a hot take. That's literally been their strategy for almost two decades.

I’m sure you WSJ editors and readers want to keep tax cuts and deregulation but promoting a small minority of “deplorables” (uneducated, unworldly, often racist sycophants) over and over again is itself deplorable.
