Chronic pain sufferers, for whom opioid analgesics were the key to a liveable life, don't count for shit in #America's phoney #WarOnDrugs.

Choosing not to do opioids might work.

it's sensible to boost access to nonpharmacologic care and most of us would & do support that. The question is if opioids have already proven necessary, is there any science to suggest that forcible stoppage is safe or effective. Scientific answer is "no evidence".

I’m suggesting that recreational opioid use can be avoided by abstention. I seriously doubt the opioid “crisis” is fueled by athletes with ACL tears and middle aged men, like me, with back issues properly prescribed opioids to manage pain.

Oregon (a blue state) has a Death w/Dignity Act that allows terminally-ill ppl to end their lives w/lethal medications. Oregon will help you DIE but wants to take away life restoring opioids from ppl #chronicpain that helps decrease their pain & suffering & LIVE a better QOL.pic.twitter.com/eOCa008qxZ

I can’t wrap my brain around the ethics: if an Oregonian asks to die, the state is ready to help. If she asks for palliative care with opioids, then - should this policy pass— the state would deny that, for the poor, uniquely. But the state will _still_ assist their suicides.

Of course it isn’t—I eagerly await the day when we treat this overdose crisis for what it is. A social and health issue. This is not the time to punish people with chronic pain. We will only push more people into street level drugs and dive deeper into the #overdose crisis.

#ChronicPain patients are being underserved, ignored, forgotten and just left behind by our doctors and legislators. Every proposed change to any rules regarding pain medications should be including long term #ChronicPainPatients We are not ADDICTS and need our meds.
