Opinion: Share buybacks have been called a “scam,” but the attack is mostly empty, writes @CliffordAsnesshttps://on.wsj.com/2BkjqLW

If the company doesn’t have growth prospects, not returning funds to shareholders for investment in better options would be worse. Idle capital.

I suspect there is a strong correlation between people who believe buyback critics and people who think the wealthy have their money stored underneath their mattresses

This should be required reading for anyone commenting or mewling about the moral corruption or 'greed' of stock buybacks. Buybacks are indeed a very useful mechanism to reroute financial capital to its best uses--the WD40 of the economy in many ways.

WD40 is way more useful. Buybacks just aren't that big a deal, and could easily be dividends instead (as the article suggests).

Agree. Either way, it is unproductive and even dangerous for companies like GOOG or Apple to stockpile so much cash--but they are making so much of it that it's hard to get rid of quickly enough!

The article clearly misses the big part of story around buy backs and assumes no trading impact. It’s keeping these names above certain level despite all the negative sentiment and macro risks. There is always a buyer!

Article totally misses the point of what most are mad about, benefiting the wealthy...new lower corporate tax rate enables the companies to return the windfall cash to the shareholders while avoiding last years higher tax rates.

Very insightful article by @CliffordAsness that should be required reading for the economically illiterate propagandists otherwise known as Senate Democrats.
