        When I was an editor I told my reporters they had one exclamation point to use and it could only be deployed if they saw Jesus or Elvis.

        @BillSimmons once proposed there s/b something between the meanings of periods & exclamation points to denote "enthusiasm, but not *too* excited". His suggestion a raised + at end of a sentence. I like+

        I throw them in the mix with exclamation marks... They're not as harsh as a period and I'm not about to send an email with more than one smiling emoji... I'm not a lunatic.

        Traditionally the ! is not used in professional communication. It has been adapted to more frequent usage in social media that seeks to provide a more authentic "voice" in texts and other abbreviated expressions. I suspect this is a case of shifting linguistic norms.
