And not a single study was cited that day.

this opinion offers no proof that the death penalty saves lives. Anecdotes don’t prove anything.

Maybe, but Pope Francis gets that the death penalty is: 1) ineffective as a matter of social utility; 2) immoral to carry out; 3) takes far too long to fairly carry out legal process; 4) more expensive than life in prison; 5) as an historical matter of practice racist in effect.

‘Can’. Either it does or it doesn’t. Empirical evidence says not. Anecdotal evidence tells you the murder rate in Texas is much higher than Massachusetts. Income and education are a much better predictor of the murder rate than executions.

This opinion contains no data, only anecdotes, in a failed attempt to claim the death penalty saves lives.

Killing someone who is the process of trying to kill someone .. 'that' saves lives. The death penalty, given the corrupt, biased and entirely f'n messed up judicial system, there's PROBABLY more innocent people being executed than guilty, everywhere, throughout history.

Pope who still shields cardinals from civil trials should be worried about cleaning up the church

Mr Bessette’s point is that capital punishment acts as a deterrent for criminals, although he does not list the proven cases of falsely executing innocent suspects. From my naive understanding of Christianity it should not be us to decide on live and death - it’s Gods call.
