Its only legitimate the interns are paid some nominal sums that would both be a recognition as well as encouragement to them. It may some time be a little burden to the companies. But its a small service they render to the society at large. They might, in turn, get good interns !

Agreed. It should also be "fair compensation " for their time, labour, and cost of travel. Sometimes it does feel like the "learner" is a burden. Positive is they know the culture, policies & procedures. Side note, we have Down's kids help out for school & community; much harder.

Deeply appreciate..! We don't have an existence independent of the society. We derive sustenance from society, so we need to pay it back in some way or other.. Profit can not be the soul yardstick for progress..

Perhaps this requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act might be another reason: "The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be IMPEDED" (All caps mine for emphasis.)

...2/2 Turns out they had a task I could do. I got the credit, the degree, and a job afterward, although that was never waved in front of me. I've been shocked at how badly the idea has been abused. I don't blame people for turning their back on it these days.

I did an unpaid internship in the 1980s, before they caught on. I was a Masters student; the curriculum offered a credit for work-related experience. I wrote to an outfit I was interested in offering to spend the Christmas break working on any task they might need done. 1/2
