I don't understand how this practice of internship ever came to be other than desperation on people's part. The idea that a company will train someone and still benefit from their efforts without paying them a cent is a form of slavery. Human productivity of any nature needs pay.

Why were they ever in style? People spend thousands on an education. Why would they ever be expected to work for free?

The common answer is ‘experience,’ but there’s problems with that. Well, one main problem, but there’re smaller ones we can dig into if you want. The main problem: PEOPLE NEED TO EAT (and apparently pay rent).

You’re expected to pay for four years of college while making little to no money. Then you’re meant to “gain experience” for no money. Where’s the support? How’s anybody meant to do this with no resources?

Education is just broken. It’s exorbitant for no reason and it’s not actually job training, which is what it is trying and failing to be.

So a few things need to happen: 1) College needs to be cheaper. I don’t know what the real cost of college is, but it’s not this. 2) College also needs to be upfront about what it is. Is it job training or is it not?

        3) We need to stop pushing everyone to go to college. Tech school is ok. Just working is ok. If you have the funds, travel if you want or do volunteer work. College isn’t the one true path to success that it is portrayed as.

        4) If college isn’t job training, employers need to accept that they have to bear some training expenses. Employers need to invest in their people and stop acting like they’re doing favors. They aren’t bestowing a job, they’re entering a two-sided agreement.
