A 3.7 GPA at many top schools is almost a 'run-of-the-mill student.' Researchers say it's a product of grade inflation, not smarter studentshttps://on.wsj.com/2tLgySd

It is grade manipulation. My children were challenged by AP and GT courses there whole way through so there GPA was not at the top but they learned and were offered full scholarships from 6 state colleges in different parts of the country. The GPA has turned into a sham.

Grade inflation starts early, at the high school level. It’s ridiculous how have to give student a 50/100 just for showing up! We are not preparing students for college much less real life. There you have future socialists, “give me!” 🤪

Also in the job market (esp. for new grads) there’s a sense that GPA matters to employers as a useful signal in hiring - it’s less and less relevant. Covered this in my book: http://hepg.org/hep-home/books/the-future-of-university-credentials …pic.twitter.com/SVB70zCkBL

With stats like this you have to further respect Purdue and @purduemitch where a 3.0 really means something, especially in engineering. @PurdueAlumni

It is true that when many people have the same high achievement, that achievement makes one less unique. This applies to 4.0 GPAs, graduation honors, and degrees from law and medical schools.

After manipulating who gets to enter in the first place (Asian-Americans vs Harvard), it's no surprise to manipulate the results on the way out of college.

Depends on the institution. There has been a decent amount of grade inflation at most of the Ivies, though Princeton has resisted to some extent. MIT has largely resisted. Caltech almost completely.

Stanford is known to be pretty bad about this, though. Probably has something to do with their legacy and athletic admits.
