It is not 'Beijing’s South China Sea escalation' but rather China's South China Sea aggression. Building islets in the EEZ of other countries and militarizing those islets, against earlier promises not to do so by the Chinese President, amounts to deception and aggression.

Finally the US Secretary of Defense, Mattis, has called out Chinese behavior in the South China Sea and its 'dept trap diplomacy'. It appears however that 'the Wall Street Journal is not willing to do the same.
