How can parents encourage their kids to be more independent as they grow? At age 14 to 17, have them schedule and go to a doctor's appointment without help; make and follow a budget.https://on.wsj.com/2J1ZyR8

hold up there.. you can't spring that stuff on a kid when they become a teen. Independence should be nurtured and encouraged from as early an age as possible. Parents need to be patient while the kid learns to do for themselves (don't get rushed & do it for them)

it starts with the smallest / simplest things - putting on socks / clothing / picking up toys / making choices (between limited options). It's a pattern of thinking that develops that allows the child to know they have the skills to do for themselves.

Carol, this WSJ piece says the same thing, even stating as early as age 2 or 3.

Out of curiosity, what does independence have to do with a kid wearing bubble wrap? Wouldn't that point more to individuality?
