keeps stating that any data shared with was "de-identified." Experts have been skeptical (in fact, I found a four years old quote from on the matter) and I now found quite a bit of info suggesting that they were right.

Unfortunately, the article's title promises more than what's really there. Lesson in crisis management? After reading the article I still don't know what the lesson is supposed to be. It's mostly speculation about Avast's stock prices, not so much management's actions.

Achievement unlocked: being mentioned in the Financial Times. 🥳🎉🍾 Now I only need to figure out what they actually said behind the paywall there...

I'm watching the Avast news coverage and it's very visible once again: as long as tech news circulate among tech publications things are mostly sane. Once they hit mainstream media it all becomes a game of broken telephone. Journalists writing about things they don't understand…

Ah, there is a public blog post on the topic:

Received an press release via email, apparently they are shutting down. Which is the right consequence if you look at their stock price. The reason is of course that "some users questioned our mission" which is as close to "we messed up" as it will probably get.

I guess this proves that I've never really known Bash. Until today I didn't realize that [ is a program located in /usr/bin.

These are only examples of course. But you need to make some hard choices and you have to communicate them in order to regain trust. Claiming that nothing happened and you've only been misunderstood isn't going to help.

    3. State what you change to avoid such issues in future. For example: "We will perform user studies to validate that users made an informed decision to share data with us. And we will have our data handling reviewed by independent privacy experts on a regular basis."

    2. Repair the damage, as much as you can. For example: "We made sure to remove all data that was collected without an informed user consent. We also removed all raw data, so that only aggregated data is stored on our end now."

I know that some employees are reading. So I'll try explaining how you deal with massive trust issues like this one. 1. Acknowledge a mistake. An absolutely minimal example: "Sorry, we realize now that we put too much trust into technical anonymization solutions."

There is a considerable body of evidence suggesting that was selling data of users without any aggregation, despite Avast claiming the opposite. And their anonymization approach is inherently incomplete.

To add insult to injury, they proudly present their new opt-in screen which literally says: "This data cannot be used to identify you." That's quite a bold lie, at least with respect to data they collected in the past. And why should anybody expect them to do better now?

PR is in full denial mode again. They published a blog post in response to the recent media coverage, yet it fails to even mention any of the accusations. And, once again, it's all "anonymized and de-identified."

"Social bots have influenced elections." Does it sound plausible? Yes. Is it scientifically founded? Not at all. Many mistakes were made in the research and a lack of review allowed an unfounded theory to spread around the world: 1/11

Avast claims the collected browser histories are 'de-identified,' thus protecting the users' privacy. But security researchers say Avast's anonymization approach is flawed, and actually exposes users to risks of spying

For reference, I actually meant to be done with Avast. However, questions from a PCMag reporter made me realize that I missed part of the picture here. His research is also well worth reading:

This thread is important when it comes to preserving evidence: you cannot rely on the Internet Archive. Companies have ways to remove unwanted information about them, and they often won't hesitate to do that.

Hey people managers! Here's a free, practical tip for making your organization more inclusive. It's one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to increase representation of senior level underestimated folk, and improve retention. It has to do with "Stretch Opportunities."
