We are the workers at . We want to build a stronger library for our patrons & a more equitable workplace. That’s why we’re forming a union w/ . Today we sent this letter to our Board of Trustees demanding voluntary recognition of our union

    Letter part 1:
Dear Worthington Libraries Board of Trustees,

The mission of Worthington Libraries is to connect people to a world of ideas and each other. Our commitment to our core values of service, collaboration, and innovation have never been more evident than in the past year. Many in our patron community have expressed their gratitude, saying that we have helped make this difficult and stressful time in their lives a little better. We have demonstrated that we are capable of overcoming any challenge when we work together.
letter part 2: Now an overwhelming majority of us have agreed that it is time to make life better for our own staff community. We deserve a voice in the policies that affect us. We deserve a voice in decisions that affect the patrons we see and interact with every day. We deserve a workplace that isn’t subject to arbitrary changes in working conditions. We deserve to be respected and fairly compensated for our experience, talents, and hard work. We deserve opportunities to provide meaningful input on the direction and future of the library.
    part 3:
We deserve a union. And we are forming one.

Every person in this organization shares the same goal: to provide the highest level of service to all of our community. As staff, we are important members of this community. When we can feel secure and valued, we can focus more clearly on ensuring that our library system lives up to our core values and prepare for the challenges to come as we strive to fulfill our pledge to be an anti-racist organization.
part 4: Please respect the majority decision that we have made, recognize our union and commit to not use taxpayer money to hire anti-union consultants or to engage in any actions that could be interpreted as anti-union behavior. We look forward to working collaboratively with you to strengthen our library system.

Sincerely,
Worthington Public Libraries United

However, we are encouraged by the time and attention they took to listen to our concerns during the meeting and we are optimistic about their pledge to remain completely neutral. We’ll be following up with the Board to discuss details about that pledge."

Our statement on Board of Trustees decision to reject voluntarily recognition and proceed to a union election with a pledge of employer neutrality.

Graphic with this text: Earlier this week, the Worthington Library Board of Trustees voted to reject voluntary recognition of our union and proceed to a union election. They also pledged to remain neutral during this process.

We are disappointed that our Board chose not to recognize our union based on the overwhelming majority support that we have already delivered to them and to the State Employment Relations Board. However, we are encouraged by the time and attention they took to listen to our concerns during the meeting and we are optimistic about their pledge to remain completely neutral.

We’ll be following up with the Board to discuss details about that pledge.

    Replying to and

My mom was integral in bringing a union to her fellow public library workers and it was the best thing they could have done. 25 years going strong.

Why we're organizing: “[A union] allows for an organization to actually tackle the issues they need to address, in order to create an equitable workplace.” – Jacob, Circulation Assistant, Old Worthington Library
