'Cyberpunk 2077' is one of the most anticipated games of the year, but both the game and its genre are rooted in a type of otherization that can't be ignoredhttps://wired.trib.al/yguJuhr

Dystopic setting where greedy corporations rule doesn’t preach equality? Wow

as someone keen for the game this is a really good and interesting article, cue gamers going ballistic bc art is allowed to be critically examined

A critical examination shouldnt presume the outcome in its headline. There're options not considered here like Asian culture being willingly adopted by the west as a positive mixing of races and cultures. Asian influence taking its rightful place along side western, globally.

I can't wait for the gamers to view and talk about this rationally.

Ironically, this felt like a very myopic and western centric definition of cyberpunk. Akira was published in '82, Ghost in the Shell in '89, and these *Japanese* publications were fundamental in shaping the genre.

No. The Akira manga started in ‘82 but didn’t get translated until ‘88, along the film. Neuromancer, Blade Runner, Schismatrix are all more influential and predate Western exposure to Akira and GitS.

The author completely erases Japanese authors and artists that have heavily influenced the cyberpunk aesthetic, hasn’t played the game, and mentions an adaptation of ghost in the shell, by a Japanese author, as an example of “otherising” Asian companies...

Interesting article! I like this sort of stuff but all genres are born out of the climate of the time. I don’t think it’s necessarily a problem that 2077 wears this on its sleeve. Japanese anime has used it to its advantage with it being increasingly popular in the west.

Your looking at this as if only westerners developed the cyberpunk genre doing a disservice stuff like akira and ghost in the shell, both vital in both shaping the genre and spreading it to the west.
