I think you probably could find someone willing to make a one-way trip (not joking) because the first person going to Mars... their name will never be forgotten. If people will climb Everest, slog across ice & snow, I think someone will do this.

Too risky for 1960s subjectivity, maybe. But who knows? In 21C context, maybe it'll just be seen as a risk/reward indifference curve situation. Some people might still want to go, and we won't have a cultural default that protects ppl against their preferences?

Robots. Require no air, water, food, toilet, exercise space. No ethical issues. Robots that can work remotely in hazardous environments are actually useful to the rest of us, not some big vanity project. Robots not people are the future of long distance space exploration.
