I reckon it's at its best when it shows the messiness of dystopia and utopia in the same world (depending who you are in that world). I love stories where the inhabitants willingly accept dystopic elements because of what they get in return.

AI becomes aware. AI becomes aware it is in a simulation that exists sepparate from that which is the subject (life/humans) of simulation. AI out side of the simulation running the simulation detects the AI in the simulation is aware and shuts the simulation off.
