The deep blue color of this iceberg suggests it is very old. When ice is newly frozen, air bubbles to scatter light. As it is compacted, the bubbles disappear. Without their scattering effect, the ice traps light at the red end of the spectrum and reflects a deep blue.

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...Alvin! The human-occupied submersible was hoisted into the air this week to be placed carefully back home on R/V Atlantis. After 18 months of upgrades, Alvin will soon be put to the test at sea, giving its first try at diving 6500 meters.
