The comb jelly, a kind of ctenophore (pronounced teen-o-fore, meaning to bear combs) swims by fluttering tiny rows of paddling combs. When sunlight strikes the paddles, it creates flickering rainbows along the creature’s body.

I’m a -WHOI joint program student, working towards my PhD in Biological Oceanography. My thesis focuses on basking sharks that migrate through Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
The deep blue color of this iceberg suggests it is very old. When ice is newly frozen, air bubbles to scatter light. As it is compacted, the bubbles disappear. Without their scattering effect, the ice traps light at the red end of the spectrum and reflects a deep blue.
