  1. Scientists have used trained conservation dogs to locate scat and collect DNA samples for a variety of animals, including bears, foxes, gorillas, and whales. But no one has used the technique for reptiles—until now.

  2. "Tracking animal scat, or fecal matter, can reveal where endangered species live, how many of them are living in an area and what might be threatening them. And it’s a less stressful way of monitoring species than trapping and releasing them."

  3. Our dogs are at it again! This study is the first of its kind using detection dogs to find reptile scat. "Scat sampling allows biologists to study elusive, rare or dangerous animals without the need for direct contact."

  4. Benson is part of the same anti-poaching unit that employs our dogs Ruger, Rudi, Earl, and Chai. We're so excited to see him earn this honor - he certainly deserves it.

  5. Congratulations to Benson for winning the Tusk Awards!

  6. "If zebra or quagga mussels were to get established in a place like Yellowstone, it would be a major ecological crisis, not only for us, but for everyone downstream," warned Mills.

  7. If you're coming through Yellowstone or Grand Teton, come say hi to Tobias, Jax, Lily, and/or Barley!

  10. (6/6): If you happen to be hiking Missoula’s Mount Sentinel early one morning, you may see one or both teams purposefully making their way through the vegetation, hard at work.

  11. (5/6): From now to the end of October, Orbee and Ngaio, and Zoey and Melissa will be closely monitoring plant growth and lending support to many of the weed management crews battling it at various sites in Montana.

    Poništi
  12. (4/6): Several of our dog teams have played their part in significantly reducing the number of woads found every season (down from an annual tally of hundreds to the 30s and below), detecting and pulling plants before they reach the dastardly flowering or seeding stages.

  13. (3/6): Since 2011, WD4C has proudly collaborated with weed managers and a range of other stakeholders across Montana to keep Dyer’s woad growth at bay.

  14. (2/6): But the plant is a menace to agricultural landscapes and ecosystems. It has chemical properties that prevents growth of surrounding plants and, once in an area it aggressively displaces native vegetation.

We've continued with the dogs all this week - the start times are pretty early which I'm not used to so I've been slacking on updating the thread

But for part of the dog's training we need wild nests found by humans to complete their "scent picture". Please let me know if you have any nest sightings!! Especially if within ~2 hours of Georgetown, ON

once the nest is visually confirmed by the handlers the fun begins! And the dogs are rewarded with an awesome toy! (This is the most fun part!)

The dogs search the area looking for bumble bee nests. And signal (by sitting or laying down) when they get on the scent.
