It’s a “vote for up to n out of m”situation, so depending on how many the voter filled in, you can get an extra vote in or invalidate the whole contest (over vote) if the false vote brings the total to n+1, I believe.

This tech was state-of-the-art in 1983(the year I was born). Everyone uses digital scanners now that are thousands of times more accurate than these. Not sure why NH still uses them. Ironically, these machines were a drastic improvement historically compared to hand rallies.

#1 - The fold would go the entire ballot and through off all the races. #2 There was no overvote. Each of the 4 candidates got 48 votes recorded and 27 rejected. 27x4 candidates = 108 (not overvotes but rejected) Impossible that it would be the exact same for each candidate.

This mechanism *always* subtracts same amount from the 4 candidates the voter selected. The fold is interpreted as a filled oval. That creates an “overvote” so none of the 4 deliberate votes in that contest counts. Not a coincidence all lost the same number. It’s how it works.
