Obviously this is not official Christian tradition at all but the theory that Judas Iscariot was a politics-obsessed Zealot who followed Christ expecting an earthly king, then betrayed him when he realized that Christ was not going to overthrow the Romans is really interesting

Benedict XVI has an excellent section about this in the second volume of his Jesus biography. He also covers Barabas (a political radical and false messiah, but much more like what the Israelites were expecting).
