Americans griping about China's social credit system is weird to me if only because we did the same thing when we made up FICO scores in the 80s to assign each American's social worth in the form of a credit score.
One of the big elements of the social credit scores in China is that if your score falls enough it can restrict what school your kids attend, flying, riding train etc. So far the US isn’t systemic in restricting these things.

Your credit score absolutely impacts what schools you can attend in America. And our tax and districting priorities fund schools more or less based on credit based housing lines. Rather than hard restrictions, we just use it to keep it too expensive for the poor to get out.

If anything we use FICO scores to get around a lot of race based discrimination conditions by giving them a metric they can use to discriminate against even know how flawed it is.
