Census Bureau is releasing data to states on Aug 12—4 days early!
Leaves Dems 6 DAYS to pass redistricting reform before GOP ends majoritarian rule in U.S. through gerrymandering that’ll last a decade.
No change will be possible.

GOP controls most of 37 states where politicians responsible for redistricting—for the House/state legislature. The process will finish within weeks. Can’t out-organize gerrymandering as Biden has suggested. Can’t rely on beating it in state court. Must preempt it with law.

Republicans will take back the House in 2022 through redistricting alone. No votes have to change from 2020 when Dems won by more than 4 million nationally. In fact, this is their stated goal. They’re already planning for this outcome. This is a big fucking deal.

Now, I’ll admit, the establishment’s open derision for the left makes it really hard to care. The wing of the party that’s currently rejoicing in Nina Turner’s defeat is racing towards this big cliff. Problem is, if they go over, so does any hope of addressing climate change.

This isn’t about Dems vs. Republicans. It’s about whether or not the electoral majority can elect state house and congressional majorities. If the GOP succeeds, we really are fucked in a way we have never been fucked before.

TL;DR: After Aug 12 the states will begin redrawing their state legislative and congressional districts based on census data. Republicans will dominate the process, drawing districts to favor their voters heavily (gerrymandering)—unless Dems pass a law banning the practice.

Communities of color will be the most disenfranchised — as usual — if Republicans are allowed to do this. When politicians pick their voters, it is a form of voter suppression. It is an existential threat to what remains of our democracy.

In conclusion: We must pass redistricting reform if we are to have any hope of addressing climate change adequately. We likely must pass it if we are to get M4a in the next decade. Dems must act.

They won’t. It may be time to give up on the Dems as a viable vehicle for positive change. They may simply be too deep in the pockets of some of the same billionaires and huge corporations that own the GOP. The smiling face of oppression is still oppressive…
