How did the definition of "moderate" come to be "screwing over the poor"? It has never made sense. Like, the "moderate" position is to support payday lenders. Why? That's not moderate, it's extremist. Moderate should be, you know, what PEOPLE support.
Gingrich played a pivotal role in the political shift, but so did Clinton. The welfare reform Clinton enacted took food from the mouths of hungry children. Republicans have driven politics hard right with great success & the help of Fox etc., but Dems have drifted with them.

I don't know anyone who thought Clinton's welfare reform was a good thing. Not then, and not now. But he also tried to over haul the health care system. When I was in college, the person trying to give me universal healthcare was Bill Clinton, not Bernie Sanders. I'm just sayin'

Plenty of folks at the time and now think Democrats have to do that sort of moderate right politicking to win... because US politics has shifted hard to the right over the past few decades. Clinton's "3rd Way" was how the Dems collaborated in that shift.
