Gen Xer here with a sincere question. Why do most people these days no longer want to schedule time to talk on the phone? Why prefer text – using only 2 thumbs to type, taking 10 times longer to communicate, and losing all nuance from intonation – even for 1-on-1 conversations?

Yes. This reminds me of one of the best lessons I learned from the chance to study with Cornel West: how to say "mhmm." He had like 10 different ways of saying it The most revelatory one for me was when he'd say "mhmm" but in a deeply questioning, almost skeptical sort of way

Maybe this is wrong or just weird, but I like that in phone conversations, the voice can express a mood that differs from the one implied by the content of the words.
