Her name was Kimiko. She survived being bombed by the USA, survived cancer from the bomb, survived losing her husband to corporate greed, earned a GED, and put herself through nursing school.

She took zero bullshit and had no filter. She’d always say “I can’t stand on” something, but she meant “I can’t stand” something. I think about that every time something frustrates me. E.g. I can’t stand on all the complacency that has led to how very broken our country is.

I got to tell her I was running for Congress before she passed away. I hope she heard me. You’ve all witnessed some of my fire lately. I know I inherited it from her. Thank you all for being on this journey with me.
