THREAD I’d like to raise awareness around an issue that is really hurting my community. Beth Israel (the main full service hospital for much of Lower Manhattan) was absorbed into Mount Sinai Health Systems.
CEO Kenneth Davis promised that Mount Sinai's financial resources would fund improvements to the hospital. However, instead of improving the 800+ bed hospital, in 2017 Mount Sinai shuttered the maternity, neonatal care, pediatric intensive care, and adult cardiac surgery units.
This past summer, they submitted two formal Certificate of Need (CON) seeking approval from state regulators to close the current hospital, build a new, much smaller 70-bed facility on 13th Street offering fewer services including:
significantly diminished ER near the 16th Street building and relocating Beth Israel's behavioral health programs into the former Rivington House nursing home on the Lower East Side. You see, we keep allowing cost cuts to increase profit and decrease our quality of life.
