Happy Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus didn’t discover the Americas, and it’s ironic that we Anglicized even his name for our history books. The LEAST we can do is stand up for protecting lands that indigenous people call home. And take time to learn history.

...but in either case the point is, from a European perspective, the Americas were "discovered" because they were unknown to Europeans and to European authors the viewpoints of the natives already living there, even city dwellers like the Aztecs, weren't taken into consideration.
Ahh lest we forget about the little known European perspective of the “discovery” of “wholly unknown” land masses.

It doesn't make their perspective right or just, it's just how they viewed things in the 15th century. In either case we use the same kind of language for other "explorers" who traveled into other lands that were already settled, like ancient Chinese Zhang Qian in Central Asia.
