Happy Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus didn’t discover the Americas, and it’s ironic that we Anglicized even his name for our history books. The LEAST we can do is stand up for protecting lands that indigenous people call home. And take time to learn history.

Power to the indigenous peoples and everything, but just to be clear, Columbus and his crew were at the very least the first known Europeans to set foot on and "discover" the Caribbean islands and landmasses of Central and South America, even if the Vikings found Canada first.
Every single landmass you mentioned was already inhabited by indigenous people. That’s the point of this post. Cristobal *accidentally* landed in the Americas and brought white people to already inhabited lands, leading to the mass killing of indigenous people.

Funny thing is that he thought the world was much smaller, going against calculations of ancient Greeks like Eratosthenes, and thought he would land in East Asia, but instead landed on wholly unknown continents. Also yes, I'm well aware of indigenous peoples like the Aztecs.

...but in either case the point is, from a European perspective, the Americas were "discovered" because they were unknown to Europeans and to European authors the viewpoints of the natives already living there, even city dwellers like the Aztecs, weren't taken into consideration.
