Public transit was at least significantly cheaper for a time, but there's been some interesting cost shifting going on (this is one reason we now have advertising in DC Metro stations and trains) for quite awhile now.

This is true. The day passes in my city went up a dollar recently.

And always exit through the door when at a crowded station, pretending you're in a hurry and can't wait for a turnstile. Hold it open an extra moment to let people get in without a swipe. The guy in the booth can't do sod all about it, and it saves some people $2.75.
