In Japan, unusual seas ran ashore in 1700. 200+ years later, geologists find EQ-induced subsidence in the PNW (like ghost forests in tidal marshes). Scientists link stories & deposits to give the EQ an exact date: Jan 26, 1700 & estimate magnitude 8.7-9.2.

On this day 200 years ago, humans first sighted the continent of Antarctica. Since then we took nearly all of its whales and heavily depleted its marine life, dissolved its ozone, warmed its ocean and melted its ice. From the point of view of this amazing place it was a bad day.
