The video game industry needs to solve how we prevent “bit rot” of old games. We need a legacy-proof fusion of a Virtual console with Netflix & Steam that doesn’t reset each console generation. This will help ensure an ability to pass on the experience of old games.
The sad thing is this still doesn’t quite replicate the issue of not using the original controller for a game which I would argue is part of the sense-memory experience. Wii games will likely be lost in the catacombs of history unless you dig up the console and controllers.
I’d argue this is a bigger chasm than seeing a film projected on a filmprint vs digital. Also bigger than digital vs vinyl. Games are DESIGNED for the controller. Maybe it matters less now as all controllers are similar. But NES, N64, GameCube, Dreamcast are different experiences

I honestly don’t know how it gets fixed. The fact that Nintendo doesn’t have a Netflix style catalogue of all their games is insane to me. Stop resetting between generations. How does this get future proofed? Just put up the entire library, don’t release new games every week. Oy
i feel like they are testing the netflix-style idea with their nes / snes classic mini consoles . . . they are a 100+ year-old company so they learn pretty slow i guess??? notice the similarities between the nes / snes classic menu UI and that of the nintendo switch . . .
They’re a 100+ year old company that sold wooden playing cards... but they’re also a company that has evolved and continued to innovate in so many ways that people often overlook the great debt the industry owes to them because the “set in their ways” narrative is more salacious.

Spent my career trying to solve this and still not close. Competitive biz practice is splintering efforts continually. Things like MAME, and commercial emulation, etc, Virtual Console are not the solution if they cannot be used universally regardless of platform.
The @GameHistoryOrg is doing a lot of work here, as is the Strong Museum, etc. We were just having a discussion about standards this weekend with @markdeloura.
Totally agree that we need to crack this. It would be nice to solve officially, with support of industry, but seems politically challenging. We should still try though.
I feel like Xbox is leading in this area with back compat, though there's still a lot to be desired. (PC too I guess).
