The Trumpers are pushing the “contempt” hard because that’s the only way they know how to distract from the impeachment hearings.

But I see/hear it now from many people who are very much not Trumpers. That's the difference now vs 2017.

FedEx stmt seems carefully lawyered to be technically true but grossly misleading. Suspicious FedEx never says what reporting they're disputing. If it's untrue FedEx paid zero tax on billions of profit, you'd think they'd say that. I'd trust NYT over this corporate horseshit.

Yes but 4 years ago they would not have even tried; they would know that if they did then everyone would pile on them and they would get a big egg-on-face. Now not so.

What's novel is not the contempt, but who's expressing it. Powerless people on the political fringes have always been openly contemptuous of the press. What's different now is that people who know what's what are contemptuous.

I think there are two reasons this is happening now. One is that journalism has actually declined in quality over the past decade. The other is that it's now safer to alienate journalists, because they no longer have the editorial monopoly that they used to.

I'll trust the MSM / NYT over FedEx in this case. Note that they never actually dispute any of the data in the article - they mainly try to discredit the source rather than argue merit. Sounds like more the strategy of calling someone a "Never Trumper."

Here's an example I just randomly saw today (without specifically looking for one) of someone actually publicly disputing the headline fact of an article:https://twitter.com/bchesky/status/1196521238752948224 …
