Unfortunately, desired changes will NOT happen at the top for the simple reason that "ability to secure funding" over-rides every other crime. Have seen toxic PI's with criminal record and people with questionable behavior get tenure positions. That's the reality.

That’s good, but what leverage do they really have? From what I have seen PIs get away with anything because the department doesn’t want to look bad by admitting there is a problem and they don’t want to deal with it, unless they have to.

I agree. We also need clear processes for reporting and to support victims throughout the process. Outcomes for toxic faculty or those who harass need to be obvious, as a deterrant to others, as well as to show that leadership does not tolerate this behavior and supports everyone

RN it’s a piecemeal, inadequate process for addressing issues privately. Administration really needs to contribute to social change and implement policy changes to make the right channels available so people aren’t left with short term movements fueled by public opinion.

This is true for any faculty that carries outsized weight in their dept. recently heard a case of a young woman and a diversity hire at a uni. The faculty was awful & would berate & threaten the student. The dept was unwilling to take any action due to sensitive nature of hire
