        Morals of the story - 1. Wealth gets you medals, US cant be too smug and 2. Russia sort of did amazing even after many athletes were banned

        actually I take that back. India came REALLY low in medal rankings, that looks like an anomaly to me indeed despite poverty

        Obvious moral of the story here - a big economy helps you get medals at the Olympics. And at the Winter Olympics, which by its nature excludes the Global South anyways, only the super-rich countries really have a chance
