  2. No Senator has ever voted to impeach a President from his own party, in the entire history of the United States, until now

  4. This is why lots of my followers (most of whom are Brazilian) have been sending me all the memes on Brazil Twitter savagely mocking the situation in Iowa in particular and the U.S. system in general

  5. I think if you have only seen elections in the US, you are liable to think they are normal. I've covered results in maybe 10-15 countries and in the vast majority of cases it's an incredibly transparent system delivering unquestionable results in a few hours.

  6. I think this is one of the moments where those of us with foreign reporting experience have something to add to the conversation. We all know that this shit would never fly in Paraguay

  9. And the elites in charge of that system have certainly not come together to stop it from happening. One suspects that if their interests were directly threatened they might do so

  10. We don't need to claim there's a vast conspiracy to demoralize young progressive voters and to make our democracy look like shit, but we do need to recognize the current system is now demoralizing young progressive voters and to making our democracy look like shit

and I mean of course, journalism as a global phenomenon, as a human activity, not the story of heroic american newspaper mans

What is the best history of journalism? The best book, or the best books, on the subject?

this is the kind of shit that if I were someone outside the US that wasn't sure democracy is real (there's lots of these worldwide, I've met them all over) I might be convinced it's all a mug's game and it's better to just trust the Party or King or otherwise turn off my brain

Countries that are legitimately very poor produce national results (to secret ballots!) in a matter of hours. This was people voting in gyms that was livestreamed on Instragram yesterday and they're still doing this drip-drip shit so we have to refresh our browsers, fuck this

The fact that we are getting "early results" and "partial results" right now is so fucking insane come on guys

Final point - I think the key to being an organization that can both 1) fuck up all the time and 2) still be successful, is that you have to be operating in a space where you never get in trouble when you fuck up. No one above you. So hegemonic entities (CIA etc.) good examples

Again I think this is a false dilemma. All human actions include by necessity some amount of blundering, of stupidity and myopia. But humans also have intentions and get things done and keep secrets. You can have stupid conspiracies that sort-of succeed sort-of on accident

I can think of quite a few very important examples of organizations that are full of idiots making tons of mistakes, but at the same time successfully changed history many times, on purpose, by doing secret things in concert with other people (conspiracy). Lots of big examples
