Remember when Brazil clown Tiririca successfully ran on the slogan "It can't get any worse!" in 2010? He was wrong. It can always get worse.

We've lost a really great human being.

  3. And this includes like, extremely woke or anti-imperialist people in the developing world who I think literally hate the United States and white people. The man was true G

  4. Whoaah I just logged into Facebook and friends from literally 10-15 different countries have all posted something saying, "The Anthony Bourdain episode portrayed my culture sympathetically in a way no other American media has ever done"

  5. I'm trying to grasp at why so many people are so hurt by his death. And I think one reason may be that Anthony Bourdain was one of the very very few Americans alive that represent what is supposed to be good about that country.

  6. He may have had one of the only shows on TV in America that even acknowledged the existence of other people

  8. His shows weren't always good (which was actually funny to me, because he clearly didn't care about bullshit like CNN or whoever) and there's only so much you can do with a white guy traveling. But he just struck me as an honestly solid dude. So, fuck.

  9. I picked up "Kitchen Confidential" to browse almost as a joke in 2010, but then tore through it in one day. He was a seriously good writer, and a seriously sympathetic individual. The way he treated his own personal problems honestly, but also with ease, in that book touched me

  10. No irony, no jokes - I'm really very sad to hear about Anthony Bourdain

  11. You have to use it artfully in a full sentence within the story itself, in a way that makes clear what you're saying. Like, "a man often described as populist for his tendency to...x, y, and z." Ok that's I'm done make sure to follow those rules forever thanks

  12. I'm seeing a lot of "Populist Doug Ford wins..." and, I don't think populist means NOTHING, but I think it's too ambiguous to use as if it clearly refers to a specific, objective thing

  13. Hot take - I think you can't really use "populist" in the headline of a news story

I already had a discussion on FIFA with a couple of years ago. He proposed that FIFA be run by rich countries & like in tennis, the World Cup be held in 3 or 4 countries only

Like normally for any party it's polite to be 1-2 hours late but for buka puasa 30 mins late is...after the party is over

Gonna just keep adding to this Ramadhan thread everyone no one cares about - so Ramadhan kind of throws off social life as well because every party is one where a large proportion of the people eat as much food as possible at exactly 5:45 so by 615 it's kind of done, comatose

80% of my friends in Indonesia are Muslims who largely talk about it casually the way white Americans talk about Christianity, but I often forget that in the West, Islam is Serious

my guess is that for 90% of people that's just a minefield they want to avoid but who knows, maybe it's islamophobia or maybe my posts are just dumb as hell

lol anything I post referencing Islam, anything at all on any social network, gets like literally less than 10% the engagement of anything I else I post at all which is extremely funny to me

Even if you're not fasting, you still kinda slip into a (physical) depression like everyone else - you don't really do anything, your days are slow and sleepy, you end up staying late and eating lots of food. It's just in the air
