Finally we have important data that shows that neutralizing antibody levels are highly predictive of protection from symptomatic COVID. @NatureMedicine @Nature https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-021-01377-8 …pic.twitter.com/036IVt0OX8

20% of convalescent titer gave 50% protection from symptomatic disease. Just 3% of convalescent titer was able to give 50% protection from severe disease. mRNA vaccines and Sputnik V look really good. Blue is proportion protected from symptomatic COVID.pic.twitter.com/4k6OW47L0I

The observed efficacy with the various vaccines aligns very well with the predicted efficacy from neutralizing antibody titers. Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, Novavax, Sputnik V looking very good.pic.twitter.com/TuLtUtrzmW

The question is duration of protection. But based on this study, we should be able to use neutralizing antibody titers to decide on timing of boosters. Will help study adding/switching vaccines in immunocompromised who don't develop adequate titers of neutralizing antibodies.

@CDCDirector @ASlavitt Is the CDC looking at studying/ recommending an extra dose of vaccine for immunosuppressed people with very low/or no neutralizing antibodies after full vaccination? Until data are available, should they be tested to decide on continued masking/distancing?

Yes, it means we can better predict the reaction of an individual upon being introduced to SARS-COV-2 (e.g. whether they will develop symptoms or not)
