After 16+ years, today was the end of the infrared space telescope’s mission. Our station was controlling the antennas at our sister station as the final signals were received. 😢📡〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️🛰

Because Earth's rotation is slowing, today is ~0.00000002 seconds longer than yesterday (you might not notice).

Over the last five years I've collected eclipses with this single composition in mind. I call it "Cyclipse". It's made of a total solar eclipse, partial solar eclipse, total lunar eclipse, and waxing crescent Moon. It feels so good to see it come together over the years.

India's has been found on the surface of the Moon! Sadly contact has long been lost since it impacted the surface back in September 2019, but we finally know where it came to rest. Rest in peace, little lander.

The Earth as seen from the inside of Mercury's orbit. Thanks to the Parker Solar Probe, we get an understanding of just how small we are in the universe. The Parker Solar Probe was launched on August 12, 2018 (Sunday) aboard a Delta lV Heavy rocket. 📸-NASA JPL

Jupiter flyby from juno. A composite, but nonetheless real. Hard to believe. (video has sound but it's not required.)

Our mission imaged the targeted landing site of India’s Chandrayaan-2 lander, Vikram. The images were taken at dusk, and the team was not able to locate the lander. More images will be taken in October during a flyby in favorable lighting. More:

The International Astronomical Union has just confirmed the name for our second interstellar visitor: 2I/Borisov. (They also confirmed it was interstellar, for good measure) My understanding is this was named after the discoverer because it is a comet. The first was not.

LRO took some pictures of where Vikram was supposed to have crashed but hasn’t found any evidence of the spacecraft. The illumination conditions have changed so it may now be lying in shadow. So unless ISRO release their picture we’re still clueless.

This footage of the infamous Mercury-Redstone 1 "four-inch flight" is almost comical. It feels like it could have been lifted from a Chaplin film. Credit: NASA
