Both the Primary & the Secondary Boards now have to provide their opinions preferably within 48 hours of the case being referred to them. The requirement for a Judicial Magistrate to visit the hospital before LST is withheld or withdrawn has also been eliminated. (7/8)

The Primary Board will confirm whether LST should be withheld/withdrawn, and refer the case to a Secondary Board comprising a doctor nominated by the district Chief Medical Officer & ≥2 subject experts with ≥5 years of experience who were not part of the Primary Board. (5/8)

When life-sustaining treatment (LST) is no longer beneficial, hospitals will set up a Primary Board with the treating physician & ≥2 subject experts with ≥5 years of experience (original guidelines prescribed ≥20 years of experience for doctors from specific specialties).(4/8)

The guidelines apply to situations where (1) the person is terminally ill, undergoing prolonged medical treatment with no hope of recovery, and (2) no longer has decision-making capacity, and (3) where an advance directive (AD) may or may not exist. (2/8)
